Let’s start with our Spain bucket list: More than 30 bucket list experiences for your Spain trip
1. Start your Spain bucket list at the capital: Madrid
There is no better way to start our Spain bucket list than with Madrid. The Spanish Capital has to be mentioned at the very beginning, because you will probably start your Spain itinerary here.
Madrid is worth visiting for its history, culture, and art museums! You cannot leave Madrid without visiting the famous Reina Sofia Museum and admiring Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” painting. Other famous museums to visit in Madrid include the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Madrid is also home to Spain’s Royal Palace, which has to be one of your priorities during your Madrid trip.
As someone who lived in Madrid for seven years, I can tell you that Madrid has the best gastronomy ever. The perfect place to enjoy Spanish food, go to a cocktail bar, enjoy a live music performance, and end the night in one of Madrid’s famous nightclubs.
I wrote a complete blog post about visiting Madrid. Check it out!

2. Explore Toledo, the city of three cultures
Toledo is the perfect one-day trip destination from Madrid, and a famous city that should be at the top of your Spain bucket list. Easily reachable by train, Toledo is a city that is famous for its history. Why is it called the city of three cultures?
Hundreds of years ago, people from three religions lived together in Toledo: Christians, Jews and Muslims. That is why when walking around the historical city, you will find monuments and other small hints of its previous inhabitants: churches, mosques, and synagogues.
When visiting Toledo, you have to make sure to try its delicacy: Roast suckling pig. But Toledo is also famous for its marzipan.
I wrote a whole blog post about visiting Toledo, which you can find here.

4. Spain bucket list MUST: Live your best life in Barcelona
Of course, Barcelona cannot be missing on your Spain bucket list. Before we even talk about Barcelona’s most important landmark, that you can find at a later point, I wanted to talk about Barcelona’s history and culture.
Barcelona became the tourist attraction it is thanks to the Olympic Games in 1992. Did you know that Barcelona was NOT a beach city before that? Barcelona has an artificial beach that was created for this specific event. And the years after it attracted more and more tourism crowds.
When in Barcelona, I really recommend visiting the Gothic Quarter, the Born and the Eixample Neighborhood. If this is your first visit to Barcelona, make sure to do a tapas walking tour with a local guide. That way, you get to visit the authentic restaurants in Barcelona, further away from the tourist traps.
I wrote many blogposts about visiting in Barcelona, I am linking my Barcelona bucket list here

5. Visit Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia
Going from Madrid to Barcelona, you have to visit one of Spain’s most impressive monuments: The iconic Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia is Barcelona’s biggest treasure, designed by the one and only Antoni Gaudí. What is so special about this church? Up to this day, the Sagrada Familia remains unfinished, but it is planned to finish it in time for its 100-year anniversary in 2026. Which means, it is currently the largest Catholic church that is unfinished.
As someone who visited it earlier this year, I highly recommend seeing it from inside. The Sagrada Familia is one of the best examples of Catalan Modernism, and its interior will leave you speechless.
But let me tell you, this is one of Barcelona’s most famous monuments. You currently have to book your tickets two weeks beforehand.
You can find tickets for the Sagrada Familia here. I recommend the tickets with an audio guide so you can learn about the history of this gorgeous building as well.

5. Put the other Famous Gaudí buildings in Barcelona on your Spain bucket list, too
Once you are in Barcelona, you have to see more than just the Sagrada Familia. Barcelona is the perfect destination for art and architecture lovers, so you have to check out other famous Antoni Gaudí buildings as well:
- Casa Batlló: One of the gorgeous buildings on Passeig de Gracia. Famous for its light show during December. I recommend seeing Casa Batlló from inside as well. A top tip!
- Casa Milá (La Pedrera): Another beautiful Gaudi creation close to Casa Batlló. La Pedrera is famous for its beautiful rooftop. Can you believe the locals disliked this building so much they started calling it “La PEdrera”, which in Spanish is “stone quarry”?
- Casa Vicens: One of the off-the-beaten-track Gaudi buildings, but just as impressive
- Park Güell : Visiting Park Güell is a must-do experience when you are in Barcelona. This will be one of the most beautiful parks you have ever visited
You can find a map with all Gaudi buildings in Barcelona here

6. See the spectacular views from Bunkers del Carmel in Barcelona
Now that we spoke about famous buildings in Barcelona, I have to tell you the spot where to have the best views of Barcelona: The Carmel Bunkers. Originally, those were anti-aircraft bunkers during the Spanish Civil War, but nowadays they are Barcelona’s most popular viewpoint. For a good reason!
The Carmel Bunkers give you a panoramic view of Barcelona, from the port to the Sagrada Familia, Montjuic, and more.
I have been living in Barcelona for over a year now, and let me tell you, this is the best viewpoint to visit in Barcelona. That is why I decided to put it on the Spain bucket list
I wrote a detail blogpost about how to get to the Carmel Bunkers, which you can find here.

7. Get lost in Costa Brava and spend time at Spain’s bucket list beaches
So imagine this: Turquoise water, sand beaches, sunny days, and beautiful villages… The Costa Brava offers this and so much more. Only a short drive away from Barcelona, you can find the idyllic Costa Brava, and Spain’s most beautiful beaches.
This is the perfect destination in Spain to unwind, go beach-hopping, and get lost in gorgeous villages and towns in the Costa Brava like Palafrugell, Tamariu or Tossa de Mar. This is THE perfect place to rent a boat, go snorkelling, do a one-day trip kayaking or diving.
And the best thing: The Costa Brava is full of breathtaking restaurants with the best Spanish and Catalan dishes for you to try. My boyfriend and I do a Costa Brava trip every summer, and we always look forward to the next one.
I wrote a complete itinerary to visit the Costa Brava in Spain, which you can find here.

8. Follow Salvador Dali’s steps in Cadaqués
Cadaqués is probably one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, which is why it cannot be missing on our Spain bucket list. What is so special about Cadaqués? This town is famous for attracting and inspiring many Spanish artists, like Salvador Dalí. He enjoyed Cadaqués so much, he decided to settle right next to it. His house in Portlligat is a museum today, and I really recommend visiting it, not just for art lovers.
Cadaqués is a town full of white houses in contrast to the beautiful turquoise water. 100% Mediterranean vibe! I recommend exploring the little streets of Cadaqués, having a look at the small boutique shops, and just enjoying slowing down a bit.
I wrote a complete blog post about visiting Cadaqués, which you can find here.

9. See where Game of Thrones in Girona was filmed
Girona served as the inspiration for several episodes of Game of Thrones, and once you visit Girona, you will understand why: The medieval town is breathtaking and the perfect setting for a show like that. What can you do in Girona? You will have the best time walking around its old town and climbing the ancient city walls, which were also shown in Game of Thrones. There are even tours offered to visit the filming locations in Girona; make sure to check them out here and here.
What does Girona have to offer except TV fame? Girona’s Jewish Quarter is also worth visiting and is one of the places to see in Girona that you cannot miss. Then, make sure to visit one of the amazing Spanish restaurants in town and enjoy your stay!

10. Visit the Balearic Islands for a beach getaway
No Spain bucket list would be complete without the stunning Balearic Islands. Located off the eastern coast of Spain, the Mediterranean paradise includes Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera, and Ibiza. What is so special about these Spanish islands?! They are famous for their turquoise water, beautiful beaches, and idyllic villages. The perfect place to enjoy a Spain weekend getaway, further away from the loud cities of Spain.
Each island has its personality, and there is an island for every type of traveller. If you want to go hiking and avoid the tourists, make sure to visit Menorca. You would like to party away until the morning? Then Ibiza should be the right choice for you.
I wrote several blog posts about the Balearic Islands of Spain, which you can find here:
- 10 tips for visiting Mallorca

11. Explore Mallorca, Spain’s idyllic island
Mallorca is the largest Balearic island, and only a short flight away from Barcelona. It is known for its beautiful beaches, water sports, the Tramuntana mountain range, charming villages, and delicious food. Mallorca is the perfect Spain destination, because it offers something for every kind of traveler.
If you want to go shopping, you can go to the beautiful boutiques of Palma. If you want to go hiking in Mallorca, the Sierra de Tramuntana is the perfect place to go. And then, you can go and relax at Cala Formentor. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. Crystal clear water guaranteed. And in the evening, why not have dinner at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants in Mallorca? You see, every kind of traveller can visit Mallorca.
I wrote several blog posts about visiting Mallorca:

With offugo.es the whole process of renting a car is done online. No queues when picking up the car, no hidden costs, no waiting times. You go straight to your car and unlock it via the app. They really made renting a car a nice experience.
Don’t forget to use “GABI10” on the checkout to save 10%

10. Party & Relax in Ibiza
Ibiza is definitely not a hidden gem in Spain anymore. This Balearic island is famous for its nightlife, but it is so much more than that. Yes, Ibiza is famous for its incredible nightclubs, like Ushuaya and Ibiza One. And if you are a fan of techno music, you will have an awesome time here.
If we go beyond Ibiza’s iconic club scene, you will find an idyllic island that is surprisingly bohemian. The whole island is full of hipster markets and is the perfect destination for a Yoga retreat. That was so shocking to me when I visited it for the first time. So, Ibiza is the perfect mix of both worlds. And therefore it cannot be missing from our Spain bucket list.
11. There’s more than just Madrid and Barcelona: Explore Valencia
Now we are moving further South from Barcelona on our Spain bucket list, to Valencia. Valencia is a gorgeous coastal city that combines history with science. And when I say science, you should know that Valencia is home to the famous “City of Arts and Sciences”, a complex with a science museum, planetarium, and aquarium.
But Valencia also has a lot of history and culture. You should walk around the historic Barrio del Carmen and check out Valencia’s sunny beaches. Of course, we also have to mention Las Fallas. That is one of Spain’s most popular festivals, where fireworks and giant paper sculptures make an appearance.

12. Eat authentic Spanish paella in Valencia, Spain, bucket list foodie tips
Now it gets to the interesting part. Let’s talk about food on our Spain bucket list. Valencia is home to the iconic Spanish dish, paella. Of course, you can have paella in pretty much any area of Spain. But it won’t be nearly as good as having a traditional paella in Valencia. Believe me!
Unlike other paellas you will see around Spain, the Valencian paella is made with rabbit, chicken, and green beans. Plus points, if you go to a small family-run business where the paella is cooked over an open flame. Every foodies dream! And don’t forget: You should have paella at lunchtime, never at dinner!

13. Fall in love with Sevilla and its different colours!
Now that we are moving towards Andalusia, I have to tell you: Falling in love with Sevilla is super easy. The South of Spain is famous for its orange trees, Flamenco music, and Moorish Architecture. And Sevilla has all of it and so much more.
In Sevilla, you get to visit the stunning Real Alcazar, and walk around the famous neighborhood of Santa Cruz. If you happen to visit Sevilla during Easter, you will get to celebrate Spain’s Semana Santa (Holy Week). That is one of the most important holidays for Sevillanos, right after the feria celebrations, where celebrations go until late at night.
I wrote a blog post full of useful information about visiting Sevilla

14. Watch an authentic Flamenco performance in Andalusia
No Spain trip would be complete without a breathtaking Flamenco performance. And there is no better place for that than Andalusia, in the South of Spain. I would recommend going to an authentic place in Sevilla, Granada, or Jerez to get the true experience that is Flamenco.
But what is Flamenco? Flamenco is an emotional dance from Spain, whose origins stem from Moorish and Romani traditions. The dance is incredibly emotional and will truly move you. A Flamenco Show is usually accompanied by a Spanish guitar. And the dancers wear gorgeous Flamenco gowns that are beautiful! An experience that you cannot miss on your Spain bucket list.
I am going to link my favorite Flamenco performance in Sevilla here

15. Visit the famous Alhambra in Granada
The Alhambra Palace in Granada is one of the most famous monuments of Spain, and rightfully so! This UNESCO World Heritage site is a palace complex with influences from Islamic and Moorish architecture, with gorgeous gardens overlooking the city.
This is one of the most mindblowing experiences on this Spain bucket list. And I have to warn you: You have to get your tickets at least 2-3 weeks in advance, because only a limited number of visitors are allowed to enter every single day. You can book your official tickets here (Be careful with reseller websites!)
But Granada has more to offer than the Alhambra: Walk around Albaicín, Granada’s historic Arab quarter. And before you leave, make sure to visit the viewpoint “Mirador de San Nicolás” for incredible views of the Alhambra!

16. Visit another gem in the South of Spain: Córdoba
Córdoba is such a gem in Andalusia and one of the most fascinating cities on our Spain bucket list. The most famous monument in Córdoba is the Mezquita-Cathedral. This is a former mosque which was turned into a cathedral famous for its red and white arches. Here, you can see several layers of Spain’s history.
Apart from that, Córdoba also has a Jewish quarter. It is a true maze of cobbled streets and flower-filled patios. If you happen to visit Córdoba in spring, you can experience the Patio Festivals as well. One of the most important celebrations in Córdoba. You can already tell Córdoba has a rich history!

17. Visit Málaga in the Costa del Sol
Málaga is one of the most popular cities in the South of Spain, right in the heart of the Costa del Sol. This area of Spain is famous for sunny days throughout the year, beautiful beaches, and art! Málaga is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and home to the Pablo Picasso Museum that should be on your Spain bucket list as well!
A visit to Málaga could not be complete without having some fresh espetos (grilled sardines) at the beach. Then, walk up the Gibralfaro Castle for panoramic views, and my tip: Order a tinto de verano once you arrive. Locals (and I) prefer that to the touristy Sangría!
I wrote a blog post about visiting Málaga for one day, check it out!

18. Hike the Caminito del Rey in Málaga.
What once was one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world is today one of the most popular hikes around Málaga: The Caminito del Rey.
The Caminito del Rey is located close to El Chorro in Málaga and is almost 8km long. While I have to admit that I have not done this hike yet, it absolutely is on my Spain bucket list. Just look at the cliffs, the hanging bridges, and the river views. A must for hiking fans in Spain!

19. Visit Estepona and fall in love with the city!
I recently visited Estepona and I have to admit: What an underrated city in Spain! Estepona is a charming coastal town not far from Málaga. In my opinion, this is the perfect alternative to many touristy beach areas in Spain.
If you happen to visit during the summer months, you will see many green areas, blossoming trees, and the perfect temperature. And of course, you will probably spend a lot of time at the beautiful beach of Estepona.
20. Next destination on the Spain bucket list: Ronda
Ronda cannot be missing on our Spain bucket list as it’s one of the most DRAMATIC cities in Spain. And if you do not know why: Ronda is located on a cliff with a massive stone running through its center. Yes, make sure to check out the photo below.
The old town and the new town of Ronda are connected by the famous bridge “Puente Nuevo”. Incredible views everywhere you go! Ronda is the perfect one-day trip destination for your Andalusia trip, or if you want to explore the rural areas of Costa del Sol.

21. Frigiliana, Spain’s hidden gem in the South
This is a lesser-known bucket list destination in Spain, but it still has to make an appearance on our bucket list: Frigiliana is a beautiful town in the South of Spain, hidden between the hills of Andalusia. It is known for its beautiful whitewashed houses and many people call it the most beautiful village in Spain.
When in Frigiliana, you have to visit the Moorish quarter for its beautiful patios. If you are into photography, then you will love the beautiful patios and narrow streets. Frigiliana is also full of unique shops and family-owned restaurants. If you want to visit an authentic area of Spain, make sure to check it out!
22. Go Skiing in the Sierra Nevada
Yes, you read that right. Spain is a popular skiing destination! The Sierra Nevada, close to Granada, is home to the southernmost ski resort in Europe. So if you are visiting Spain in winter, this has to be part of your Spain itinerary.
The best thing about skiing in the Sierra Nevada are the phenomenal views of the Mediterranean Sea from the mountains. If you are lucky, you might be able to see Africa from there! And at the end of the day, you can be back right in time to have some tapas in Granada. The perfect Spain bucket list itinerary for the winter months!
There are also organised day trips you can book in case you do not want to rent a car. You can find them here.

23. Enjoy Sherry Wine in Cádiz
Now we are getting to one of the most beautiful cities in Spain: Cádiz. Cádiz is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Close to Cádiz, you can find Jerez de la Frontera, which is the birthplace of Sherry wine. Here, I highly recommend a local bodega to learn more about the history and aging process of sherry wine. And the best part about visiting Cádiz is that you are in the less-touristy, more off-the-beaten-track area of Spain. Which means more authentic experiences and fewer crowds!
What I did not know about sherry wine is that it ranges from very sweet to very dry. In an authentic wine tasting, you will pair each wine with an Andalusian bite. If wines are your thing, then Cádiz cannot be missing on your Spain bucket list!

24. Explore the Canary Islands
Now we are doing a big jump from Andalusia to the Canary Islands of Spain. Did you know that the Canary Islands are three hours by plane away from the Spanish mainland? I had no idea, but once you are there, you will realize how different the climate is: Warm and tropical
Each island has its own vibe: Tenerife is tropical and home to the volcano Teide and Spain’s highest mountain. Lanzarote has gorgeous landscapes and gorgeous beaches. And Gran Canaria offers the perfect combination of city and beaches.
The best thing about the Canary Islands is that it is the perfect Spain bucket list destination, the whole year round. If you are craving sunshine, beaches, and nature, and are open to a Spanish island road trip, then you know where to go!
I wrote several blog posts about visiting Tenerife that you should check out:
- Tenerife bucket list for first-time visitors
- One week in Tenerife itinerary
- What to do in Puerto de la Cruz, the ultimate travel guide

25. Go Whale Watching in Tenerife
Did you know that Tenerife is one of the best places in Europe for whale watching? Yes, besides dolphins, you might be able to see pilot and fin whales migrating throughout the year. An unforgettable experience! Daily boat tours are departing from Los Gigantes and Costa Adeje that you should check out. My personal tip: Go with a smaller boat so you can get closer to the animals without stressing them out.
This experience is still on my Spain bucket list, but a must-do for nature enthusiasts visiting the Canary Islands
You can find different tours to go whale watching in Tenerife here
26. Visit Mount Teide in Tenerife, Spain bucket list highlight
I have to admit, I have been to Tenerife some years ago and it has been such an incredible experience. That is why I really want to recommend visiting Mount Teide in Tenerife. This is Spain’s highest peak and another UNESCO world heritage site on this Spain bucket list.
IF the weather is good, you can take the cable car almost up to the very top and hike the last bit (if you go with a guide who has a permit). This is one of the most unique experiences on this list, so make sure to check it out. Tenerife is an absolute dream island to visit. The perfect bucket list experience!

27. Spain bucket list MUST: Walk the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago is more than “just a walk”. This is a pilgrimage, an advanced hike of several days, or even weeks, and an unforgettable experience. While there are several routes, all of them lead to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain.
During this pilgrimage, you will pass through historic towns, meet many fellow travelers from all over the world, and walk around Spain’s untouched nature. This hike will be a very special experience. Traditionally, people sleep in hostel dormitories and pay for services to send their backpacks from one place to the other. This is the perfect thing to do with friends or even as a solo trip.
If you want to read more about hiking the Camino de Santiago, you should have a look here.
28. Visit Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum
Let’s go up North on our Spain bucket list to Bilbao, in the Basque Country. To me, this is one of the most underrated areas of Spain. First of all, Bilbao is home to the iconic Guggenheim museum. Modern art fans, this one is for you! This is THE museum for world-class temporary art exhibitions.
Apart from that, Bilbao is also home to incredible food. And here I have to mention Bilbao’s pinxtos culture. I highly recommend going on a guided pinxtos tour during your visit. There, a local guide takes you to the best bars in town and shows you the best food spots in town. A must!

29. Go on a Tapas tour in León
We are going to stay in the North of Spain and go towards León, the iconic city on the way of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. I was actually lucky to do my Erasmus semester in León and live there for a year. Even though León is a smaller city in Spain, please don’t think that your visit will be boring in any way!
León is famous for its incredible historical quarter, wherever you go, you will be looking at historical buildings. And the León Cathedral has received the title of the most beautiful Cathedral in Spain before. Then, make sure to check out the “barrio húmedo”, the “wet neighborhood” of León, that received its name thanks to the many bars in the area. My personal highlight: León is also famous for its tapas culture. It is very common to receive a tapas (small snack) with every drink that you order there.
That is why I put this on our Spain bucket list: You absolutely should go on a tapas tour in León to experience the city’s best tapas bars. You can find tapas tours in León here.
30. Fall in love with San Sebástian
Many people say that San Sebastian is the most beautiful city in Spain, and I agree with that. The North of Spain will always have my heart, which is why I had to put it on out Spain bucket list, too.
San Sebastian is very close to the French border, and you could say it’s where gorgeous beaches meet world-class gastronomy. The city’s urban beach “La Concha” has received the title of the most beautiful urban beach in the world.
But the best thing about San Sebástian, or Donostia, is its insane gastronomy. The area is home to so many Michelin Star restaurants. Here, you have to check out Arzak and Mugaritz, which are both famous for its incredible dishes. But even if expensive restaurants are not your thing. Even a regular restaurant in San Sebastian will give you a bucket list experience when it comes to food!

31. One in a lifetime Spain bucket list experience: Visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
When writing this blog post, I made sure to not only include the typical bucket list experiences in Spain, but to also add unique places to visit. For example, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a tiny island in the northern coast of Spain in the Basque Country.
So what is so special about it? San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is famous for its dramatic setting and if you think “Wait, it looks familiar…” it’s because it was featured in Game of Thrones as Dragonland.

32. Explore the hidden gem of Spain: Logroño
Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, is Spain’s best-kept secret when it comes to wine and gastronomy. And if you are a wine lover, you probably have realized: La Rioja is the famous Spanish wine grape that grows in the beautiful vineyards in the area.
You should start your Logroño trip in Calle Laurel, the famous street where locals go to for pinchos and La Rioja wine. If you are into wines, you should check out the bodegas in the area for a possible tour. Whenever I visit some of Spain’s wine regions, that is one of my favorite things to do.
Now that we have spoken so much about wine on our Spain bucket list, I have to mention that Logroño is also worth visiting for its history and the Cathedral.
33. Visit one of Spain’s most impressive beaches: Playa de las Catedrales
Just one word: Galicia. Galicia is one of the most beautiful areas of Spain. And one of the more difficult ones to reach, but believe me it is worth it. The last item on our Spain bucket list has to be the most beautiful beach in Spain: Playa de las Catedrales.
Right in the North West of Spain is A Coruña, and close to it is the province of Lugo. This area is famous for its cliff formations, and right in the middle of it you can find this breathtaking beach. And the best part: Thanks to the tide, you can walk around the beach in the morning before the rising water makes it impossible in the afternoon.
I still think about how I visited it during my first year in Spain. To me, it is the most beautiful beach in Spain and the highlight of our Spain bucket list.
